Hi, I’m Heather John.
My Story
Creating graphic and modern sterling silver and natural stone jewelry brings together my lifelong curiosity for picking up interesting rocks, getting my hands dirty, a deep appreciation for design and Nature’s artistry, and my love of a good challenge.
Collections are inspired by the flow of water and erosion, the dynamic movement and forms of birds and pollinators in my native habitat garden, the light and textures of the Oregon high desert, and our grounding connection with the earth.
I hand select stones for their distinct personalities and graphic shapes, many directly from the lapidary artist. Each captures a unique moment in geological history. I’m especially drawn to minerals suspended in silica — quartzes, agates, feldspars — for their depth, texture, harmony, how the minerals play with light. I’ve been hoarding stones for years, with a growing focus on local & ethically sourced materials.
Each stone setting is a unique design puzzle — balancing proportion, asymmetry, irregular shapes. Creating a visually pleasing silhouette and composition.
I use traditional metalsmithing techniques to create my hand fabricated pieces: saw piercing, hammer forging, soldering, filing, hand finishing. I source certified post-consumer sterling silver sheet and wire and collect my precious metal scrap for refining.
I work from the light-filled backyard studio my husband and I built in NW Portland, OR, under a canopy of oak trees. My gold-certified Backyard Habitat draws Anna’s hummingbirds, dark-eyed juncos, spotted towhees, loads of native bees, and the cutest little wild bunnies.
Turning a stone over in my fingers, feeling the gentle curves. Watching the shifting colors as the light passes through, enjoying the grounding weight in my palm. Imagining how to suspend this ancient mineral, celebrating its uniquely sublime character. Taking cues from modern design and architecture in its deceptive simplicity, the visual weight of midcentury modern jewelry. Always with an edge, something unexpected. Asymmetrical yet balanced. Sensual and fluid yet sound.

When I’m not in the studio my husband and I built together, you may find me cooking something new with him in our cozy 2-butt kitchen, relaxing in our naturescaped garden full of native plants, birds, pollinators and wild bunnies, collecting agates on the beach, visiting the Portland Japanese Garden with my daughter when they’re home from college, overloading my shopping bags at the local farmers market. Or maybe working a puzzle on my iPad, dreaming of the Deschutes River, or collecting more rocks.
